Matron Mrs Martyn (Address 32 Bartholomew Street East, Exeter, Devon)
Institution, founded in 1861 for the training of domestic servants, the design being to receive neglected and destitute children or others requiring instruction, to teach them the rudiments of household work and to inclinate, as far as possible, habits of order and obedience. The age of admission must, as a rule, be between 13 and 16 but girls under 13, and others not of the City of Exeter, may be admitted if paid for at a rate of £10 a year and clothes. During the year 1882 there have been 36 girls in the school which is supported by payment subscriptions and donations and money received for needlework and washing. The school is managed by a committee of six ladies meeting on the first Saturday of each month.
