The following is the journal kept by the Late Richard Charles Knight (Reg.) whist he was an inmate at Stanhope Industrial School, Ashford Kent.

Mary Wall would sincerely like to thank Helen Smith, Richards niece for allowing me the privilege of including the journal on my website.

This is the true story of Richard, as a boy of six years old he went to school now and again, until one day he decided enough was enough and he did not go anymore.  At the age of seven, something was done about this and Richard was to start a new life.  He was taken from his family, and although at first he thought the man that did this was cruel, after a time he thought about all that had happened and realised that it was not cruelty, but an act of kindness, not only to Richard but also his family – sometimes “it pays to be cruel to be kind”.
