SCHOOL INDEX

Originally a mixed school, from 1902 it became boys only.

Founded in 1851 and opened in January 1852 in temporary premises.  The new building opened in 1854.  purpose-built in quite part of town set in 5 acres.  Certified 2nd July 1863 for 100 boys and 50 girls.  Re-certified in 1902 for 150 boys only and 28th June 1904 for 120 boys.  Cessation of certificate or closure in 1907.

Became a place of detention from 1918 to 1928.

1884 - Superintendent & matron Mr & Mrs Felix Thomas; schoolmaster Mr. F. Bignell; assistant schoolmaster Mr James Ward; and a female teacher, Miss Smith; assistant matron Miss C Thomas.

1891 - Superintendent & matron Mr & Mrs Felix Thomas; deputy superintendent Mr Ed. H. Thomas; schoolmaster Mr A.F. Canut; assistant schoolmaster Mr J. Ward.  Female teacher, Miss E.A. Jones.

1893 - Superintendent & matron Mr & Mrs Felix Thomas; assistant superintendent Mr. Edwd. H. Thomas; schoolmaster Mr Chas. H Wynn; assistant schoolmaster Mr James Ward.  Assistant schoolmistress for girls, Miss Grane; matron's assistant, Miss Eyre.

1900 - Superintendent & matron Mr & Mrs. Thomas; schoolmaster Mr. H.J. Kirke; Mr W.A. Stannard succeeded Mr W.H. Harding 20th May; Miss M.P Harper succeeded Miss Clayton 13th August 1900 as schoolmistress.

1903 - Superintendent Mr. E. H. Thomas; matron, Miss Thomas; schoolmaster Mr. H.J. Kirke; Assistant Mr. H. Long; Miss Chatham has succeeded Miss Harper as assistant teacher.
